There's a whole set of technologies that are permanently 30 years out. Fusion is the most famous. 30 years is the prediction event horizon. Up to 30 years you can do a pretty predictive job using simple extrapolation. The analysts will tell you that it takes about 30 years to go from lab experiment to commercial ubiquity.

But beyond 30 years the unknown unknowns stack up. And you're reduced to modelling guesswork, hoping a Black Swan doesn't eat your homework.

30 year futures with a date. 2030 felt and maybe still feels like the far future because back in 2000 it was. Except now its only 5 years. And instead 2050 feels like the far future. Except it's very nearly closer than 2000.

Probably time to start taking the 2038 problem seriously.

The I-Sage Covid situation report, and others, suggest that Covid in the UK is in a lull at the moment.

And yet I keep coming across people who've had "the worst flu/covid ever" that took 3 or 4 weeks to subside enough to get back to full time work. Nobody's testing even with LFTs. So unless they get ill enough to turn up in A&E there's no way of knowing if it's Covid, RSV, or Flu.

I hope it's flu and Covid is fading, but I distrust the calm-mongering.
