Every year around Jan 7 I get quite disparaging about Bruce Sterling. But then some time during the year he blows me away again with a post or lecture or an SXSW closing speech. This is one of those times where he does it again with too many ideas per sentence.

I read all of this. What's the big deal? Most of these ideas are as old as the hills. Have I missed something?

Are the hills ten years old? On re-reading it, you're right. But apparently there's another generation growing up, going to SXSW and having to re-discover and re-capitulate the path from 1970-2010. Because they can't remember or didn't experience what happened even 5 years ago.

On which surprisingly many people (including some you and I knew quite well at one time) saying things like "too young to remember what the country was like when Thatcher came to power". As if that's some kind of argument or explanation. So no surprise then that Cameron was 13 and Clegg was 12.

One of these days I'll get to SXSW. Still no one talking about the future of work. The corporates are catching on to zero hour contracts or should I say 'on demand' work contracts (my son is on one of these with Sega). The implications of this are far reaching - more so than the latest ideas about the coolest stuff happening in tech.
