Last night I jokingly asked somebody on Skype if there was an "Occupy Dubai". He made a wonderful comment, "the locals would send their drivers to protest on their behalf". Then I read a piece about Dubai in Saturday's Guardian. http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/oct/14/dubai-liam-fox-fundamentalism-capitalism Of course just as elsewhere, it's not the wealthy property owners protesting but the downtrodden masses and in Dubai that means immigrant workers in a totalitarian, corrupt state. And of course, immigrant workers aren't going to protest if they risk being imprisoned and never going home.

So do you support Arsenal? If you have any conscience, maybe you shouldn't.

I've noticed that people generally have a great ability to ignore corruption, authoritarianism and all that sort of nasty business as long as there are business deals to be made or little distractions to keep them busy. It's probably not the same but I hardly hear anyone criticizing Singapore much even though they don't have a free press, since it's such a clean place to live and a great place to work, right?
