I believe people create these accounts hoping to sell them later on. But it doesn't make any sense, they can't secure any vanity url, and others are more likely to report them than to follow them by now.
There's BBC Sports as well. It all looks at least as official as the equivalent Twitter accounts. But I guess it's probably not.
I kind of understand what Google is trying to do with the whole "use a real name" thing, but it feels like an impossible task to me. I'll be surprised if they can keep on top of it.
Well, fake profiles start following me no sooner than they get taken down these days, so I guess Google is keeping up for the time being. And they can't afford not to, it's their last chance to build a social network that people actually use :p
