http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00ykxg9 The Chinese are Coming. Very interesting but somewhat superficial look at globalisation, Chinese style. What's scary is just how powerful a force Chinese Capitalism is when allied to Western style consumerism. This isn't Coca-Cola style globalisation, it's a web of transactions. Cheap goods in Europe, built in China from steel and wood, from pig iron and steel made in Brazil, using wood and charcoal created by destroying the rain forest. Each player in the chain is just trying to make a profit. The small players are just trying to survive. Meanwhile the Chinese players aren't taking over the countries the way the European Imperialists did in the 19th century. For them it's just business. But business on a truly massive scale. There's a sense in which the whole world's resources and the attendant pollution associated with exporting them is now being harnessed to China's 10% compound annual exponential growth.
