Unimpressed with FourSquare. It can't work out where I am on an iPad Touch even though Google Buzz has no problem. Trying to enter a place, it then can't find it, even though the web UI can. Using the web UI I can't work out how to checkin. Maybe I'm being stupid, but I can't see it. Type in Currently In "Adam Street Club, Adam Street, London, UK" and it thinks I'm in "Benoni, South Africa". Fail! Needless to say, a work colleague with an iPhone had no trouble locating and checking in with WiFi off. Makes me think the iPhone app is using some different geo-location to Buzz in Safari. We were underground so there'd be no GPS, only cellphone triangulation. There seems to be this assumption about geo-location apps that they're only usable on an iPhone and other recent phones. Ignoring the fact that Wifi location in Firefox, Chrome and IE+Gears works pretty well. So using the apps on a portable laptop is perfectly valid, but not considered worthy by the programmers/suits. Personally, I'm looking forwards to when all laptops come with a GPS and 3G chip just like they all now come with a camera. ps. Back home again.
