This product sums up what I hate about Apple. It's a 6" USB cable that tricks an Apple device into thinking it's plugged into an official Apple charger. http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/cellphone/b43f/ All my other USB devices will happily charge from any USB port with power on it, regardless. The USB standard copes perfectly well with 0, +5v 500mA on the outside pins regardless of what's on the inner signal pins. It's only Apple who have subverted the USB standard so that Apple devices will only sometimes charge from a plain old USB charger or if the PC has the right device drivers or software loaded, or whatever. Most of the time, you get the dreaded "Charging is not supported with this accessory" or nothing happens at all. So yet again, Apple have twisted a standard to make sure you only buy all your white shiny things direct from Apple. It's going to be very interesting seeing exactly how Apple comply with the directive to standardise on micro-USB for charging sockets. You have to bet that even if they fit the socket, they'll find some way to make sure it doesn't actually work without an official Apple device or software on the other end.
