As usual, voting seemed somewhat pointless. In my constituency, the Pirate Party have no candidate. Labour have given up. The Tory party have a fairly boring candidate in a very safe seat who apparently needs two homes at our expense despite being in easy commuting distance from London. The LibDems are closest but have a very young[1] no-hoper who's not going to make it. And then there's the usual bunch of UKIP, BNP, Independent crazies. No Monster Raving Loony Party either. So unless you're one of the hard core Tory masses, your vote is just to encourage them to keep trying. Proportional Representation and the resulting hung parliaments and coalition governments may not be a good thing for the country as a whole but it would at least stop half the country feeling disenfranchised and that voting is pointless[2]. [1]It's not just Policemen who get younger as you get older. There's a batch of 20 year olds coming through. And even David and Nick seem a bit young to be doing that job. [2]The women in the family all voted because "100 years ago, people died to give them the right". I voted because I always do, despite claiming to be an anarchist and claiming I'm not going to. The son probably won't because he probably won't emerge from his room in time and even if he does, he'll just go "meh".

British democracy means that unless you are in one of about 150 marginal constituency, your vote is meaningless. Tragically. 6 May 2010 6 May 2010

Ah. The lottery. That tax on the poor to pay for things used by the rich. 6 May 2010 6 May 2010

@ Andrew Henderson - the trouble is that for the vast majority of voters, the first-past-the-post system is like buying a lottery ticket hoping to win big in the National Lottery, only to find you have been sold a ticket in the Kansas State Lottery. First past the post means your vote is irrelevant in about 90% of cases.

Oh, and Julian, some form of proportional representation is what the UK desperately needs. People in the UK always point to Israel and Belgium, conveniently forgetting that these two countries have extraordinary histories, and are severely split. They never point to those hotbeds of political instability such as Sweden or Germany, which are much more like the UK. Anyway, I'll be hoping for a Pirate victory tonight!
