2010 looks like being the first year when the total amount of information (novelty) doubled in under a year to a current total of ~1.2->1.6 zettabytes. That's one to think about. http://www.emc.com/collateral/demos/microsites/idc-digital-universe/iview.htm IDC reckon that in 2009 it was at > 60% annual compound growth. This is accelerating so my guess is that around now, the compound annual growth is > 100%. Looks like we'll still be accelerating towards the shockwave in 21-Dec-2012 rather than blasting through it. Although we've already broken through one barrier in that there's not enough long term storage to hold it all. Most of that information is now held in short term storage. Philosophically, that means that history is dead, there is no future and we're living in the now. And the now is contracting to cover a shorter and shorter timescale.

I disliked history for ages, but I tend to be more and more interested. It may be in reaction to that ! 12 Dec 2010 12 Dec 2010

There's a side effect of this rapid doubling. Half all the world's digital info is less than 1 year old. 75% is less than 2 years old. That's why I said "History is dead" because the vast majority of current info is very, very recent. 12 Dec 2010 12 Dec 2010
