And all of that is informed by the mildly cynical view that if they couldn't achieve power, then they couldn't change anything. See above about "The opposition bloody opposing". But now they're in power with a landslide. And still talking about a relationship like Norway. Except without single market, customs union or freedom of movement. Mad as hell and not going to take it any more. I seem to be in the angry phase of the angry-denial-acceptance cycle.

The question is whether it's politically expedient at this time to openly campaign against Brexit. I do understand the view that it was political suicide for Labour to do that before the previous elections. I'm not sure I agree, but I understand. The question then becomes when it does become politically expedient. How bad does it have to get before it's in their and the country's interest to openly abandon the experiment.

"putting much greater emphasis on retaining the benefits of the Single Market and the Customs Union". So how about actually fighting to stay in the Single Market and the Customs Union ? I will not support a Labour party that is prepared to fight another general election on an intention to implement "the best Brexit there can be".

Her belligerent approach has left Britain without allies or good will across Europe. As a result, Britain enters negotiations in the worst possible position. The Prime Minister must now change her approach. She must drop ‘no deal’ as a viable option and put much stronger emphasis on jobs, the economy and retaining the benefits of the Single Market and the Customs Union.

The Prime Minister’s limited and conditional offer is too little, too late. We will seek a strong, collaborative new relationship with the EU – not as members but as partners. This means changing the tone of the negotiations, and seeking to remain a member of common European agencies that benefit the UK such as Europol, Eurojust and the Erasmus scheme. The Prime Minister has no mandate or parliamentary majority for her Brexit strategy.

Labour will not accept any watering down of workers’ rights and environmental standards as a result of Brexit. We will seek significant improvements to the Government’s Repeal Bill to ensure there is proper oversight of the use of new powers and no drop in EU rights & protections. We are also clear that we would unilaterally guarantee rights for EU nationals living in the UK & seek reciprocal rights for UK nationals living in the EU.

That means rejecting ‘no deal’ as a viable option, negotiating strong transitional arrangements to ensure there is no cliff-edge for the economy and putting much greater emphasis on retaining the benefits of the Single Market and the Customs Union.

Labour and Brexit. A thread. 7 years ago we'd had a general election where Theresa May had sought a mandate and not got it. I wrote this. The Labour Party membership renewal team are phoning me about once a week at the moment. Note here. Ehrlich was using and writing about an exponential model just as the reality of global population growth was transitioning from the hockey stick exponential stage of the S Curve to the middle linear section of the curve. We've had 50 years now of linear growth and we're only just beginning to see hints of a transition to a falling growth towards a peak. Population is just one variable. Resource and pollution cinstraints are two more essential variables in any non-trivial model.
