And also Roads and Transport. That cost is a big part of the bad split in council tax funding between County and District levels. At some point we should talk about another regressive tax, VAT. It works as a tax on added value in the supply chain. It's hugely problematic as a tax on consumption. And it's hugely regressive as a tax on consumption of essentials by the poor. |

All regressive taxes are bad. All policies that make specific taxes more regressive are bad. https://www.theguardian.com/money/2024/dec/15/group-of-mps-intent-reforming-madly-unfair-council-tax -Poll-, sorry, Council tax desperately needs fixing from both ends. Collection needs to be made much more progressive with a zero base rate. And some of the things that it needs to fund need to get their funding from somewhere else. Like care, convalescent, palliative homes. And SEND education. Maybe do this as part of the Council Reorganisation? |
