"we’re not close to running out of these materials any time soon" is making the same mistake as the original bet of being too short term and extrapolating the near future from an inconsistent past.

Both Simon and Ehrlich seem to have been working from models that were insufficiently complex. And trying to draw conclusions from a single value (Price) that is affected by many other factors than just supply. The way the graphs have gone since 1980 is instructive here.
