That's actually quite weird because it's saying that the EU should be rejected by the UK in the same way that the UK was rejected by colonial Africa. From a similar person with a colonial empire background, I've seen the same argument about Scotland for why the UK should be broken up. Scotland should throw off the UK in the same way and for the same reasons as the UK should throw off the EU.

I was talking to him later. And there was a very strange bit about Brexit that I've seen before from similar people. If you've spent time in old commonwealth countries in Africa there are two observations. The first is that no matter how bad No-Deal Brexit gets it can't be as bad as the broken systems in Africa where people still survive. And second that an imperial oppressor should be thrown off no matter what the consequences.

It's almost (but not quite) as offensive as when Humphreys on the R4 Today program last week challenged the Irish Europe minister that Ireland should leave the EU and “throw in their lot with this country.”.

As it's Brexit day. I found this from 2019 in the final run in. Here's a local Tory councillor and ex mayor. > I am sure that the Republic of #Ireland could form a customs union with the UK, independent of its one with the EU-26. It would be great to see greater union between the two states in the British Isles, which have a lot in common with each other. I'm absolutely speechless. It's really hard to even know where to start, it's so wrong.

5 Years ago today Johnson "Got Brexit Done" with his disastrous deal. The UK formally left the EU. It was said "No Deal is better than a Bad Deal" but they were all bad deals. We're stuck with May's red lines : No Customs Union, No Single Market, No Freedom of Movement. We're stuck with a Northern Ireland agreement that can never work and can never satisfy either remain or leave. And for all the talk of a ""Reset in UK-EU relations" Labour seem determined to keep those red lines in place.

Land and especially countries is defined as "this" or "that" by lines of ink on maps. All too often those lines were drawn by the UK for their own purposes. For a few hundred years we have said that those lines of ink are protected by an international rules based system. It was always negotiable by force but within that rules based system. Israel and it's supporters are now choosing to reject that. Saying the rules should apply to everyone else but not to them.
