My local district council now has no permanent planning verification department. 40 year lead manager died. 30 year assistant left soon after. 2 juniors with 15 years experience each on long term sick leave. (Long Covid?). Temps are holding the fort but the backlog got up to 20 days between planning requests going in and them being authenticated and checked. This seems to me to be a good argument for Unitary Councils. Larger area, larger departments, more backup.

It was increased considerably by the Ukraine, Afghanistan and Hong Kong intake agreements but even with those we failed to fulfil the promises the gov made to those people. Over 75% of all asylum requests result in right to remain either immediately or after appeal. Asylum seekers get almost nothing and are not allowed to work while their claim is processed. They get the bare minimum of food & lodging to keep them alive.

Small boats immigrants are < 4% of total immigration. 90% legal with Visas. Fully legal Visa immigration increased hugely with Brexit as we swapped short term, fully qualified EU individuals for long term, differently-qualified families from the rest of the world. The asylum seeker processing backlog is reducing rapidly since the last election. It got as bad as it did largely due to the lack of formal routes of entry, defunding of the processing system, focus on ridiculous schemes like Rwanda.

80th anniversary of Hiroshima. One day in the distant future, we will have got rid of Nuclear weapons and say "Never Again". Why not today? It's time the minor nuclear powers (eg UK, France, India, Pakistan) unilaterally disarmed as a deliberate moral choice. There's literally no situation where they would be used except as a secondary, vengeance weapon after a first strike by the major powers. Which is spectacularly pointless.
