Deliberate or accidental undersea data centres? We used to build nuclear power stations on shorelines for the cooling. Till Fukushima and rising sea levels made flood/tsunami protection a major insurance item. Are they now planning hyperscale datacentres in the same places? With local SMR nuke power.

AI is a monster we've given birth to, that will eat us all. Hyperscale datacentres connecting to the gas network for local electricity generation because they can't get a big enough electricity connection. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2026/may/18/uk-datacentres-plan-to-burn-gas-to-generate-electricity https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/may/13/datacentres-electricity-consumption-uk-us-ai https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/feb/23/new-datacentres-risk-doubling-uk-electricity-use-ofgem-peak-demand

#Cocktail - Red Lion 50ml Gin, 15ml Curacao, 15ml Lemon, 15ml Orange juice, 15ml soda It's a daisy. Stir the 4 main ingredients briefly, just to cool it. Pour, then add 15ml soda to lengthen it. Can be tricky to get the dilution right. Takes practice!

One of the weirder aspects of yesterday's UtK march. Piles of crosses for people to pick up and carry. Were they flammable? Captured by money from the US Evangelical Right? https://www.facebook.com/reel/26845932275040352 The there's the Pro-Israel side right next to blatant anti-semitism and islamophobia Too much to unpack there.

So it was a bit sad to go back to Wilsons (Bristol), now with it's Michelin star and be churned through multiple courses, before we had to leave to provide room for the next sitting. 8 years ago or so, it was much more relaxed and frankly more fun when it was more of a bistro.

Destination, fine dining. I'm bored of the fixed menu, flight of small dishes, matched with a flight of wines. I've only had 4 in the last 30 years that were any good and still remembered. - Launceston Place - Clove Club (the best!) - Osip - Wilkes, Bath Wilkes was frankly weird but perfect. 3 people, one table, one superb chef doing everything including service and chat. These days I much prefer the traditional 4 course start-fish-meat-dessert with maybe 1 or 2 amuse bouche.

A long article about the problems in UK politics and the churn of 6 (nearly 7), PMs since 2016. And yet it only mentions Brexit twice, in passing. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/may/17/the-ungovernable-country-why-britain-keeps-losing-prime-ministers

- Critical water shortages both in cities and for food production - Climate change induced heavy weather. Uncertain monsoon and extreme heat. That's quite a pressure cooker.

- Mass exposure to Black Swan weather. Bangladesh in particular is densely populated and prone to flooding. But so are the poorest states in India. - Very rich anarcho-capitalists, in control of technological industry, powered by very large reserves of coal but with little oil. - A proxy war zone on one porous border with Afghanistan that keeps spilling over into Pakistan with the help of US drones. (Is this over?) - Pakistan now well into collapse after multi-year floods & heat

- Pollution problems (see all the main cities but especially Delhi, Karachi) - Large areas at risk of flooding from rising sea water when they're not being flooded by the monsoon. - One country (India) that controls water flow to two others (Pakistan, Bangladesh) - Dysfunctional governments. Increasingly extreme - Religion - Nuclear weapons - Severe and increasing danger of Black Flag weather every year. That's a combination of heat and humidity that kills humans without air conditioning.

- Nowhere to go since the land routes out all involve 15,000ft passes that are closed, easily defendable and that already have military presence. Or into Myanmar which is dense jungle. Or into Iran and that route's harsh and lawless. Or into Afghanistan which is an active war zone. The sea routes are difficult, long and the likely destinations uninviting. All of which makes any mass emigration very unlikely. - The rich and middle classes may find a way out, but not the poor

Pre-monsoon temperatures across SE Asia are always brutal. But this year seems particularly brutal. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/may/17/its-no-longer-exceptional-karachi-struggles-under-brutal-new-reality-of-extreme-heat Looking at the Indian Sub-Continent and S Asia as a whole, it appears to contain a perfect storm of chaos factors. An occasional post. A little out of date now. - 1.8b people growing at 20m/year. Maybe 2.5b by 2050.

Old enough as an ex-web developer, ex-LAN specialist, ex-program lead, ex-CTO, that modern life is just one wind up after another. Everything always was a bit broken and a bit shit, but now it's buried five layers of framework deep with an AI UI on top. Damn, I'm glad, I'm now retired, 70 and can shake my fist at the sky and kids. Them pesky kids, eh? We would have got away with it, if ... Shut up doomer! Put the keyboard down, and step away from the enter key.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@jbond/115668298785930239 Still a most excellent Manhattan variation. I have confession to make. I rarely see Bullitt Rye or Sazarec Rye. So I tend to make Rye recipes with Bourbon. Am I a heretic?
