Whatever your personal opinions of Foot, Healey, Scargill, Thatcher, Powell, Tebbit, Joseph, they were part of the news and media landscape. And so part of what the 80s were even if much of it is now forgotten or ignored. Remember the riots and the bombs? There were some Good/Bad ones.

But the 80s are really hard to get a handle on. It was the age when we all got personal electronics and computers on every office desk. When porn, viagra, E, Trance inducing music all went mainstream. When homosexuality but also Aids became overt instead of covert. And authoritarian right wing governments in both the US and UK with a strong belief in gov mandated, market led, greed is good, capitalism.

And the 90s? Pre-Millenial Tension?

What's mildly weird about this is that people struggling now with Retrophilia are nostalgic for the 70s, 80s and 90s.

We lived through the 70s and 80s and ought to have an opinion of two decades that are almost universally shunned as being rubbish. The 70s feels to me like a game of 2 halves. The first half was really the psychedelic 60s, just a bit late. The second half was violent and chaotic (both real and metaphorical) Punk, Iran, Afghanistan.

In recent months, Essex has seen an outbreak of Retromania after significant numbers of parents failed to inoculate their children against Right Wing Capitalism. The population had lost it's herd immunity to the dangers of unchecked greed and the longing for a golden past of certainties.

We can't be too careful or society may drown in an ocean of vintage whimsy and any possibility of creativity be lost forever.

Until it finally collapses under the weight of debt and is re-nationalised or wholly funded by central government. Because the infrastructure is too big and too essential to fail. It costs more for both government and customers for a worse service. In the long run, this story gets repeated for *every* privatisation.
