The old models and the much, much more complex current UN models still only really look at trends in fertility, deaths and births. There's less consideration of economic, resource, pollution, food production constraints and so on. All of these are very likely to have a major effect on global population in the next 100 years. Just as artificial fertiliser, advances in disease control and public health, and cheap energy did in the last 100 years.

TFA talks a lot about Malthus and Ehrlich. Both of them had models of future population growth that were too simplistic and are more like thought experiments in constant exponential growth. Reality is that it's been linear since 1970 (when Ehrlich published) and now looks more like an S-Curve.
