Winter fuel allowance. It was created as a kludge to avoid increasing the pension. Just roll it back into the pension and say goodbye to it.

Pension pot savings, CGT, IHT. You what? Are you just trying to create chargeable work for financial advisors?

Employer NI contributions. Why would you tax a company's ability to employ people? You take PAYE and NI from the employee, why also tax the employer?

And so on.

It's never going to happen, but I wish a UK Chancellor would pledge to simplify the tax and incentives system. Every budget should remove a complication or remove a tax or benefit by rolling it into another existing one.

ISAs started with such a simple idea. Encourage small savings by creating a tax free vehicle with a limit per year paid into it. Then we had Cash ISAs and Shares ISAs. Now cash parts of them are taxable. Just stop it and go back to where it started.

I missed this anniversary yesterday. One year since the UK Gov proscribed support for two words beginning with P and A.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/jul/06/monday-briefing-who-are-the-people-trying-to-protect-our-right-to-protest

They're still trying to stop an appeal in the Scottish courts that the proscription is unlawful in Scotland.

Classic. I go for a walk up on the hill to waste some time before kick-off. Get back and it's delayed for an hour due to weather.

Hmm, we'll see.

Meanwhile, here's Moonrise over Essex.

Two pubs on lock-in. One corner shop still selling beer.

2-July marked 1000 days of the war in Gaza.

> The ceasefire has proven to be sham, even if news outlets continue to call it such.

> The world’s attention shifted to Iran, and then got tired and moved on to something else.

Even someone as monstrously productive as Balzac acknowledged as much: the books we have written are less beautiful than those we imagined writing. Speech is only a fraction of writing, which is itself only a fraction of our inner life. To reduce the human spirit to its capacity for oral communication is, quite simply, dumb."

This needed repeating.

“Anyone who has ever written — or even merely attempted to write — knows that it is sometimes possible to express in writing realities inaccessible to speech. And anyone who has truly written knows something sadder still: what one actually manages to write will only ever be the merest trace of what one dreamed of writing.

Start of the 19th week of the Israel-US-Iran war.

Nothing's happening, so it's dropped out of the news cycle.

Israel is still flattening South Lebanon, Gaza and West Bank.

The US is still building the Biggest Embassy Ever in Beirut.

A few ships are leaving the gulf via the Iran-Oman controlled southern route. There's s a little tit-for tat fire.

The funeral of Ali Khamenei took place. On 4-July.
