Bristol is trying to build a CBD (Canary Wharf on Avon) and regenerate bits of the centre. Which means endless road works, diversions. And the feeling of living in a building site that is slowly turning into a soul-less no go area of corporate offices and pavement. Can you imagine a homeless encampment in Hampstead or Park Lane? There are numerous backstreets that have become permanent mobile home stops. The weirdest is a leafy lane on the edge of a big park in the richest area of the city. |

Just spent a couple of weeks exploring Bristol and surroundings. The inequality in money and attitudes was stark. Going on the same day from Kingswood to Keynsham, Bath, Stroud & Tetbury was shocking. Not just for the poverty of most of it, the lack of soul of the end less car-centric housing estates ("Garden Village vernacular") but the entitlement of the rich parts. Most of Bristol, just like most of the UK, is broken, beaten down and poor. Nothing works. Everything is broken. |
