What could possibly have happened in 2020-22 that resulted in England pupil and teacher, authorised illness absence growing by so much?

There are bits of it that still feel like handwavium. In particular it feels a bit like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copenhagen_interpretation in that it's only difficult to think about because you're treating the equations as objective reality. It's all very well to say that it's space-time that's expanding not the stuff in it but, but,

# · Mastodon View the site

But if nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, then how did these bits of stuff get further apart than light could travel in the available time?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metric_expansion tries to explain this and I think I'm beginning to get it. It also helpfully points out that lots of highly qualified physicist have trouble with understanding this as well so it's not just me!

Science Cosmology stuff

After the Big Bang is it Space-Time that expands or the distances between the things in it?

Something I continue to have trouble getting my head round is the idea that there are bits of the universe that are so far apart (and accelerating away from each other) that there hasn't been enough time since the Big Bang for light to travel between them. So there's a kind of quantum foam of light cones that can't interact.

UK
People on PAYE down
Vacancies down
Salaries up, a little, below inflation
Functionally unemployed up
Long term economically inactive up
Employment (% in work / available to work) up
GDP Up
Benefits costs up

But, You can't trust ONS, OBR, HMRC, DWP, DHSC to have accurate figures.

So what is this? Recession, stagflation, inequality, "Broken Britain", out of control chaos, 15 years of austerity, tinder for a revolution?

Next time somebody tries to tell you that big pharma is hiding medical cures, or the illuminati, sorry, the 1%, are manipulating world society, or China created Covid in a lab, or similar conspiratorial bullshit, just say:-

"That's all a bit 'lizard people', isn't it?"

Except 2025 reality IS all a bit 'lizard people'. And stop anthropomorphising lizards. They don't like it.

VOTE!

1) Get the Tory Out. Too bad for too long
2) Keep Reform Out. Solution to Blue Tories is not even more extreme Pale-Blue Tories

What do we want? Evidence based medicine.

When do we want it? After full, transparent publication of all trial results both future and historical, peer review and without being encumbered by long term patents.

We want our governments to subsidise this for the good of society as a whole and to enforce the rules with realistic penalties. Without the market being hopelessly skewed by mandated oligopolies bought with high priced lobbying.

End Times Fascism is a mental illness. An inability to cope with reality leading to extreme views and conspiracy theories. And the deliberate exploitation of it in vulnerable people for power and profit. SadoPopulism.

UK + Ireland land and offshore wind power is only about 1000 * 1000 miles. Surely we can manage supply to demand from and to anywhere in that square. With cross border interconnects as well.

Proposed regional pricing for electricity
https://www.theguardian.com/business/2025/apr/14/octopus-and-its-customers-ask-treasury-to-back-zonal-electricity-pricing

If there's a regional mismatch between renewable supply and demand, then we haven't spent enough on the grid and wide area interconnects. And the energy contract environment.

If we need to encourage high energy use industries away from the SE of England, variable energy pricing isn't the way to do it.

Is anyone talking about the future of work?

15 years ago, the corporates were just catching on to zero hour contracts & internet mediated gig economy. The implications of that were far reaching - more so than cool stuff happening in tech. But now? AI and mechanical turk going after white collar make work. Human intensive work completely shifted to high population, low wage economies. Remaining factory production heavily automated.

Turn on the TV for the build up to WSB at Assen on TNT Sports 2. And there's Farage on Kuenssberg on BBC 1. WTF! Why is that racist, fascist grifter being interviewed again?
