I don't live in the UK, can I still join?
Of course. You might have trouble attending the meetings, but you're welcome on the mailing lists and will receive the newsletter.

What is an FF anyway?
An FF is a single track vehicle with a seat height below 20" and a seat back capable of supporting the rider. This gets stretched to include vehicles with taller seats and a backrest. It's really the seat back and the feet in front of the body that make the difference. The big scooters are not really FFs, but would form the basis of an FF, even if all you do is add a backrest.

What's a PTW?
Short hand for Powered Two Wheeler. It's an attempt to break down the differences between scooters, motorcycles and mopeds.

The Burgman/Majesty/etc isn't imported into my country, how do I get one?
Then you've got a problem that is may be hard to deal with. If you're in the EU, then you should be able to relatively easily import from another EU country.

Australia does have a grey market but there's a fair amount of paperwork. It's definitely worth looking into importing one from Malaysia or Indonesia, or even direct from Japan.

For USA/Canada it's rather harder. The short answer is that when the manufacturer decides that there is a decent return on investment to selling in the USA, it'll happen. Which means probably never.

The longer answer is,

  • Political: The USA has a policy of restricting imports by forcing a hard and expensive process on the manufacturers to check conformance with their rules.
  • Private: this means that a grey market is almost impossible. You *can* import privately or in small numbers, but if you're caught, the machine gets impounded and destroyed. And you can't get insurance.
  • Marketing: The Helix sells in small numbers and all the research says that the Americans only buy Harleys and SUVs so it'll never sell. The Pacific Coast actually sells in small numbers, but too small to justify the rest of it. Honda seems convinced that one day, the market will catch up, just not yet.
  • Urban Myth: "The DOT rules say you must have a foot brake." This is not true.

Where can I buy a Quasar?
Well they're not made any more and only about 20 ever existed. If I ever hear of one for sale it'll get posted here or on the mailing list.

I'm thinking of building an FF, where do I get an HCS?
Royce Creasey can supply a hub and parts to get you started.
Email: royce@hightech.clara.co.uk
URL: http://www.hightech.clara.net/

Otherwise you need to try and find a second hand Difazio hub or try and persuade Performoto to build one for you.

Why do motorcyclists laugh at me?
Well it''s either your taste in music or it could be because they're laughing with you, not at you. Ignore it.
